Being Held by the Present Moment

mindfulness and self-compassion Nov 11, 2024

As children, many of us were held, cradled in a way that told us we were safe, supported, and nurtured. But as adults, we’re often told we must stand alone, "make it on our own," no matter what life throws at us. Yet, in our pursuit of strength and independence, something powerful is lost.

Who holds us now? Who supports our dreams and carries us when we falter? And if no one is there to lift us up, how do we hold ourselves through life’s uncertainties?

Our bodies—faithful, tireless—try to do this work for us, carrying us through disappointment, fear, and the unknown. But do we sometimes ask too much of them? We may grip too tightly, hold on too hard, and cling to outcomes or roles that weigh us down. Have you noticed the tension in your neck or the ache in your hands, perhaps the signs of all that you're holding onto?

What if there was a different way to be held?

Present awareness—the simple act of slowing down and being here now—offers a surprising support. By surrendering our constant need to control, we find that the present moment itself can hold us. Can we trust it to carry our dreams and disappointments, our hopes and fears? Can we allow ourselves to release, to loosen our grip on "how things should be" and instead embrace "what is"?

So, I invite you to pause. Notice your breath, feel your body, and ask yourself: Can I let go of the need to "hold it all together"? Can I trust the present moment with my unfulfilled dreams and simply be here?

Let the present carry you, just for now, and find the release you’re seeking.
