The Journey Back to Myself
Sep 23, 2024For many years, feelings of overwhelm were a constant companion for me. I found myself perpetually struggling to keep up with the fast-paced world around me. It felt as though my central nervous system was in constant overdrive, but at the time, I didn’t think there was another option. Everyone I knew was on the same track—busy, stretched thin, and constantly chasing the next goal. I told myself that this was simply life; that this was the only way to be successful, productive, and fulfilled.
In my early thirties, I had three young children, a full plate of career aspirations, and a volunteering program that demanded my energy. There were events to organize, people to manage, and seemingly no time to pause. I was pushing myself to be everything to everyone, and in the process, I became utterly drained. I tried to ignore the signs my body was giving me—low-level health issues, poor sleep, and a sense of being constantly on edge. I thought if I just kept moving, kept achieving, I could outrun the exhaustion.
In an attempt to gain some control over my health, I threw myself into an intense exercise routine. I decided to train for a half marathon, convinced that this physical goal would bring me the sense of accomplishment I craved. For two years, I ran team relays and park runs, and while I was proud of these achievements, I was ignoring a deeper truth: my body was asking for rest, not more pressure. I wasn't replenishing my energy; I was depleting it even further. My cup was empty, but I refused to listen.
It wasn’t until a few years later, when life handed me a series of both personal and professional challenges, that I hit a brick wall. My body, mind, and spirit simply couldn’t keep up with the pace I had set for myself. I was forced to stop, to re-evaluate, and to ask myself some tough questions. This was the moment when I began to truly explore mindfulness and meditation, not just as abstract concepts, but as tools I could incorporate into my daily life. I knew that if I didn’t make these practices a regular part of my routine, I would continue to spiral deeper into overwhelm.
What I discovered as I began to build these practices into my life was that slowing down wasn’t just a necessity—it was a gift. I started by implementing small, foundational steps to support my health. I carved out time each day to breathe deeply, to be present, and to prioritize my well-being. Slowly but surely, I began to notice a shift. My body responded to the care I was giving it, and my mind began to find clarity and peace amidst the chaos of life.
Life didn’t stop being challenging. It never does. But what changed was my ability to find peace within the storm. I realized that true peace isn’t about living a perfectly calm life, free from difficulties—it’s about cultivating a sense of inner calm even when the world around you is unpredictable. This is the peace that sustains, the kind that allows you to move through life with grace, rather than constantly feeling like you’re at the mercy of circumstances.
I don’t claim to have all the answers. My journey is ongoing, and like everyone else, I continue to face new challenges and growth opportunities. But what I do know is that by putting meaningful practices into place—by creating the space for mindfulness, intentionality, and self-care—I have been able to reconnect with myself. I’ve come to accept and embrace who I am, and I’ve learned that I don’t have to hustle or push myself to the breaking point to find fulfilment. In fact, the opposite is true.
This journey back to myself is what inspired me to create The Slowdown Method. It’s a framework built on the same foundational principles that have helped me reclaim my sense of peace and self-worth.
